Full Description

A survey of the archaeological and historic features was undertaken within Abernethy Forest Reserve for the RSPB in 1995.

Fragments of a large circular drystane enclosure 42.1m in diameter, corresponding in part with a walled extension of Rynettin Birch Wood as shown on the 1863 OS map. The wall still encloses a few elderly birch trees in what is otherwise pasture. The largest stones of the wall are 0.7 - 0.8m in height and are used to face the internal side of the enclosure. These stones are placed on their vertical axes. There is evidence that the wall once formed a complete circle although there is a great deal of disturbance to the east, including another linear field boundary of drystone construction, running N/S.

The 1863 OS map indicates that a track may also have cut through this feature from east to west. The centre of the enclosure was flooded at the time of the survey but it was possible to discern the remains of other structures internally. No obvious entrance is apparent but only the western third of this feature has not been cut by subsequent walling and tracks. It is impossible to date this feature without further investigation but it may have originally been the remains of a prehistoric enclosure, possibly dating back to the late Bronze Age. <1>
