Full Description

A survey of the archaeological and historic features was undertaken within Abernethy Forest Reserve for the RSPB in 1995.

Remains of rectangular, turf-built structure on promontory overlooking the River Nethy. The structure is on a prominent site with an almost sheer drop down to the river on one side. The remains are about 6.8m long and 3.75m wide, and seem to have been partly built into the hillside. There is an entrance on the side away from the river, facing north west, about lm wide. The walls are up to 1.3m high and c.lm wide. There is a low dyke leading from the structure along the promontory, in a south westerly direction for about llm. A second dyke projects about 1.5m from the other side of the structure, in a west north westerly direction. The function of the building is not known. It may be related to the logging operations in the forest: possibly for keeping a watch on the timber collecting at the above dam and/or coming down the River Nethy. Buildings overgrown with grass and bracken, within forestry plantation. <1>
