Full Description

A survey of the archaeological and historic features was undertaken within Abernethy Forest Reserve for the RSPB in 1995.

A building foundation with drystane walls standing to a maximum of 1.2m at its west corner. The external wall length is 14-17m N/S (310°) by 5.5m E/W (40°). The walls are 0.6m thick, consisting of unworked river stone, undressed except at the corners, although waterworn blocks have been used at the SW corner giving it a rounded appearance. The north end of the building is constructed using smaller, more angular stone with 8 courses remaining to a height of 0.8m. There is evidence of a fireplace on the north wall, 7m from the west side, internally 1.4m wide, 6.5m deep, with a spread of some 1.66m into the building.

2 doors are visible, one 4.96m from the north end, 0.8m wide on the east side. The other is 5.12m from the north on the west side, also 0.8m wide. Both are obscured by tumble. No interior wall divisions are visible because of the large amount of disturbance and build up of tumble internally. The stone footings of a wall, possibly of a kailyard, running for 7m from the NW corner of the dwelling are also visible, although they have been destroyed by a recent forestry plantation at its NE end. This wall runs due east from the building and follows the contour of the steep slope. The building is on the 1858 Seafield Estate Map while the field system only is visible on the 1863 OS map. The field system has been destroyed by a recent forestry plantation. <1>
