Full Description

What may be an unroofed building is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch (Sutherland 1878, sheet xii), but it is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,560 map (1962).
Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 11 August 1995.

Feature 3; Standing a few metres behind the landward edge of the storm beach at Port Mor, on the east bank of the Allt Lochan a' Mhuilinn, is a ruined rectangular drystone building. The building has been much modified, originally measuring 4.2m N-S by 2.8m E-W with walls 0.6m thick, but later reduced to 2.7m N-S by 1.2m E-W by the erection of a (not quite) central N-S wall, presumably using stone from other wall sections no longer required. Only slight traces remain of the original S wall and of the S end of the W wall, and the original E wall is reduced to its basal course. The later, smaller, building does not appear ever to have had a S wall, but its three other walls still stand to 1.5-1.8m. The stonework is roughly coursed. There was at one time an entrance in the N wall, lm wide, but this has been blocked up with random stonework.

The location of this building is strongly suggestive of a connection with inshore fishing, possibly either the seasonal herring industry, or lobster fishing, (Port Mor is not suitable for sizable commercial vessels, but might have been used in fair weather as a landing place for small boats). The main use of the building, both in its original form and as modified, seems likely to have been as a store for nets, creels and other fishing equipment, but it may also have served as a bothy. <1>
