GR corrected to above from 1st ed OS centred to area of quarries that are extensive aklong the E side of the road. The modern workings lie to the N of this (new planning app 03/221/FULCA). See separate record for stone cutting saw mill (ND15SE0057) - HAW 5/2003

Refuse Disposal - Spittal Quarry.
Refuse disposal is presently centralised at Castletown Quarry, but there are growing management and environmental problems there. The District Council have carried out an investigation of the suitability of Spittal Quarries prior to submission of a planning application.
PROPOSAL - Scottish Natural Heritage intend to designate some 20 ha. At Spittal Quarry for its geological interest.
