Full Description

ND15NW 45 148 560

Enclosure/field system (ND 1480 5600). Bank 1m wide and 0.3m high, enclosing an area within which there is a series of striations 6m apart running NE-SW, probably drainage channels.
R J Mercer, NMRS MS/828/19, 1995

An enclosure and a boundary dyke are shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1876, sheet xvii) and on the current edition of the OS 1:10560 map (1970).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 5 December 1995

The enclosure and field system originally recorded by Mercer is clearly part of a larger network of dykes, fields and presumaby farmstaeds that were probably originally all along both sides of the Burn of Achanarras prior to its straightening and virtial canalisation. Only those parts in what would now be considered rough pasture on the west side of the burn are still extant to various degrees and are vaguely visible in vertical aerial photography but more apparent in Scottish Gov/SEPA LiDAR data. <1> <2>
