Letter from William Rodger, joimer, to Sir William Drummond Stewart. He is at present working at Balmacaan for Lod Redhaven.
1851 GD 121/Box 102/vol. xxiii/308
The house was visited by the Inverness Scientific Society and Field Club in June 1885 during an excursion to 'Glen-Urquhart'. "Under the guidance of Major Grant, the party had a run through the policies of Balmacaan House, where a number of magnificent auracarias and other ornamental trees attracted attention, and also through the building itself. The abode of the factors in the olden time, it subsequently became a favourite residence of the lairds of Grant, and it is now leased by Mr Bradley Martin, a New York millionaire, for whose reception next month it is being got ready. Portions of the old walls still remain, but the building has been entirely transformed and much extended, and it is now a very handsome and commodious summer residence. A fine view of the lower part of the glen and loch beyond is obtained from the drawing-room windows." Two Pictish symbol stones found at Drumbuie were also seen at the house by members of the society (see also MHG45064) "The one contains spectacle drawings, and the other a tracing of a serpent, &c., both specimens of primitive art of a kind found here and there in Scotland, and always regarded with great antiquarian interest." <1>
