Full Description
A farmstead comprising seven roofed buildings and one unroofed building is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1875, sheet l). One partially roofed building and three roofed buildings, one of which is labelled as a youth hostel, are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1971).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 21 May 1996
This is the site of the modern youth hostel currently being refurbished and formerly a bothy for the stalkers. Though clearly an important location for settlement being near the junction of three paths from Cluanie, Morvich and Invershiel, no trace of an earlier settlement survives. The 1872 OS map showed 6 roofed and 2 unroofed buildings here. <1>
The settlement of Alltbeithe is noted in the 1841 census and is marked on the 1st edition OS map. It consisted of 5 roofed and 2 unroofed buildings the majority of which are sited west of the burn and are within an enclosure that crosses the burn. Two of the buildings recorded in 1874 appear to be extant or remodelled. The others have either been destroyed or lie in ruins. <2>
