An historic building survey of the steading was undertaken by AOC Archaeology Group in 2024. The works were completed in advance of proposed conversion and alterations to the existing building to form a residential dwelling. Rosemount Steading comprised a one and a half-storey U-shaped building with ranges to the north, east and west, and a central courtyard open to the south. The stonework of the building was in reasonable condition. The southern extent of the west range roof, however, was in a poor state of repair resulting in the partial removal of the original tiles and cupola, and had been covered with tarpaulin. Remnants of a circular building, possibly a horse gin to power a threshing machine, was located towards the northern extent of the east-northeast facing elevation. The interior of the structure had been subjected to modern infilling due to previous health and safety concerns. The current U-shaped steading and horse gin structure were first identified on the 1871 Ordnance Survey map. The steading building had been subject to modification over the years, evidence of which was visible in the structures seen today. Whilst the layout of the main U-shaped steading was to be retained, the remains of the Gin House were to be demolished prior to the construction of a new drainage system. As such, it was recommended that an evaluation trench be excavated through the remains to identify and record the full extents of the structure. <1>
