Full Description
The kiln is situated close to the riverside, revetted into the hillside, with a stone revettment on the river side. The entrance faces E, built of rough, dressed boulders, mostly granite, batter on inner side of wall sloping slightly outwards. Side opposite the entrance is tumbled (perhaps robbed?).
The kiln is 'bowl-shaped', no signs of stoke-holes etc. Basal courses and some of entrance stones plus lintel roughly dressed. Dimensions approx. 1.5 - 2m high, walls 1m thick, internal diam. 3m. No obvious trace of burning on inner faces, but heavily overgrown with moss, mature tree growing at NW corner and immature regeneration over the other parts of the walls.
The source of lime would probably be from a local deposit.
