MARY MARGARET, 30 ton, sloop, master Alex Buchannan, of Inverness, bound from Loch Hourn to Uig, Skye. Lost 29 Nov 1873, 6pm. Kyle Rona, south end of Rona, 5 mile from Rona Lighthouse. Cargo herrings. 5 crew all saved. Value of vessel ?140. Value of cargo ?40. Wind north west, strong breeze, squalls, showers. Thermometer at 9am, 45 deg., 9pm 45 deg.
Barometer 9am 2900, 9pm 2910. Cause of wreck, squally weather and missed stays.
Sir, I beg to acquaint you that having heard this morning that a vessel had gone ashore on the south end of Rona and become a total wreck, I sent off John McLeod the occassional's brother to ascertain the particulars. The vessel had come from Loch Hourn with 40 barrels of herring on board & in coming through the Sound of Rona, missed stays and came ashore on the Rona side and has become a total wreck. All the herring except 3 or 4 barrels have floated away & are lost. John had to take a boat from the big harbour & go over to Raasay before he could ascertain the preceeding particulars as the master & crew had gone over there.
