Full Description

A long, unroofed, building complex (or possibly two buildings) is shown to the southeast of Big Burn on the OS 1st edition 25 inch map. An undefined boundary, is shown crossing over it from north to south. It may have formed part of a township with the similarly unroofed buildings shown to the immediate north (see MHG26342). <1>

Aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 1994 and RAF 541 A435, frame no.3073) show a long building, or possibly two shorter buildings on the same alignment, in a patch of rough grassland to the SE of the Big Burn. The flatter ground around the building bears faint traces of rig.
Information from RCAHMS (DCC) 31 January 1997

The site was visited during a walkover survey by Jacobs in July 2008 in advance of the proposed construction of a substation site at Knocknagael. Traces of a building and wall were noted, but due to the height of the vegetation and gorse no accurate plan of the building or the rig and furrow were discernable. <2>

NOTE: it is not at all certain that the site was actually seen during the 2008 walkover survey as vertical aerial photographs taken in both 2005 and 2009 both show the site and its immediate area to be completely clear of gorse, though it is possible that other vegetation may have obscured it. However, the site's grid reference previously lay at NH 6618 3787 which is c.155m to its east-southeast so the surveyor may have been looking in the wrong place but did not otherwise record the building as a new site at its actual location [IS-L 12/03/2026].

The site was visited during a walkover survey by S Farrell in Sept 2010 in advance of a proposed forestry planting scheme. It was noted that the site actually lay at NH 6603 3881 (c.155m to the north-northwest) and that it comprised two multi-room buildings. The building at the north was 16.7m by 4.1m and of 3 compartments. The 2nd half was 19.1m by 4.1m in both walls spread to 1.2m and up to 0.5m high. There was no evidence for rig in the surrounding area. It was recommended that site should be given a 20m exclusion area and be excluded from scheme. <3>
