Full Description

Centred on 7215 0918

A settlement comprising five hut-circles (ROG95 325-29) and a field-system occupies the leading edge of the second terrace and the back of the first terrace to the SW of the River Brora. A hut (ROG95 324) is situated on a stony rise at the back of the first terrace.
The hut-circles measure between 5m (ROG95 326) and 12m (ROG95 329) in diameter within stony banks spread to 1.8m in thickness and 0.6m in height. Three of the hut-circles (ROG95 325, 327, 328) have been levelled into the slope, with a drain around the line of the outer face on the upslope side of one (ROG95 327). In two instances the bank terminals have been thickened at the entrances (ROG95 326, 327), and at the latter a later hut has been built over the hut-circle.
The field-system (ROG95 984) is characterised by a series of plots, which cover the NE half of the site, interspersed with small cairns measuring up to 4m in diameter and 0.4m in height to the SW. The plots are located on the sloping ground and average about 60m by 30m, with the long axis lying along the contour. In an area of heavily burnt ground to the N of one of the hut-circles (ROG95 327) there is a patch of cord rig, measuring from 1.1m to 1.4m between furrows.
The hut (ROG95 324, NC 7236 0920) is sub-square and measures 3.9m across within boulder footings 0.9m in thickness and 0.3m in height. What may be a turf walled pen lies to the SE of the hut.
