Full Description

NC70SW 75 7374 0458

Two buildings (ROG95 963-4), a hut (ROG95 965) and a corn-drying kiln (ROG95 969) are situated on the fringes of the fields beside the public road to the ESE of Achnagarron.
The buildings measure 8.3m by 3.6m (ROG95 963, NC 7375 0462) and 8.8m by 3.1m (ROG95 964, NC 7374 0458) within faced-rubble footings 0.7m in thickness and up to 1m in height. Both have an outshot, and the southern building (ROG95 964) lies on the W side of an enclosure. Both buildings are shown as roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1879, sheet civ); the 2nd edition depicts the W end of the N building (ROG95 963) as roofed but does not show the other building.
The hut (ROG95 965, NC 7372 0466) lies on the W side of a field bank and measures 3.5m from N to S by 2m transversely within faced-rubble footings 0.6m in thickness and 0.4m in height. The 1st edition map shows a roofed building at this location, but much larger than the present structure and orientated from E-W; the same building is depicted as unroofed on the 2nd edition. The footings which were visible on the date of visit may be the E end of the much larger building which is depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition maps.
The corn-drying kiln (ROG95 969, NC 7376 0457) is situated on the side of a knoll in amongst birch woodland to the E of the road. The bowl measures 1.6m in diameter within a faced-rubble bank 0.9m in thickness and 0.4m in height. The flue is on the SW, and a drain has been cut around the upslope side of the bowl.
