Full Description
A building, possibly a shieling-hut, lying on a slight knoll just above the footpath along the south facing slopes of Glen Affric, was recorded during a survey of the West Affric estate by J Wordsworth for the National Trust for Scotland. The building, which is round-ended, measures 9m from east to west by 3m over drystone walls which are 0.75m wide and 0.4m high. A 20m stretch of wall overlying the building, extends down the hill to the path. It is fairly delapidated and is 0.7m thick at the base and 0.5m high where best preserved. The building would appear to be a shieling similar to those described earlier. The walling is more puzzling as it is too short for an enclosure. It may be a hide for shooting deer, though one would anticipate curved ends to allow different angles of fire. <1>
