Full Description

A survey of the archaeological and historic features was undertaken within Abernethy Forest Reserve for the RSPB in 1995.

An L-shaped building foundation, corresponding to one which is shown as being roofed on the 1863 OS map and unroofed on the 1:10,000 OS map. The total length of this building is 21.35m N/S. The north end is 13.9m E/W at its gable end with the maximum width of the south end 4.67m. The gable length is 6.1m N/S and this gable is situated at the north end of the building. No internal division is visible to separate the gable from the rest of the building but the doorway, lm wide, is located 3m from the NE corner, on the east side, and so entrance would have been into this gable which was probably the byre end. A partition wall is shown on the 1:10,000 OS map separating the gable from the main building but is no longer visible. The only internal division still visible is 15m from the north end and divides the main part of the building from a round-ended low rubble spread 4.9m N/S. This may represent an older construction, a lean-to shed or a very small enclosure. The maximum height of the footings of 0.4m. A further unroofed extension, appearing as a small dog-leg at the north end of the building on the 1:10,000 OS map was not located and may have been of wooden construction. <1>
