Full Description

A survey of the archaeological and historic features was undertaken within Abernethy Forest Reserve for the RSPB in 1995.

The remains of a probable livestock enclosure with the drystane walling still present on the south and west sides. The south wall is 24m in length and is aligned 120° SE. The entrance is 11.9m from the SW corner and is 3m wide. The west side is incomplete at its N end and measures 18.9m in length, 40° NE, with some dressed stones externally, possibly re-used, at the N end. The wall spread is 2.9m at its widest and stands 1.2m at the SW corner. A low terrace, demarcated by a turf line runs the entire length of the west side of the enclosure, parallel to the wall and 2.5m from it, to its east. It is 0.3m high and may be the remains of an earlier building on the site. The north wall of the enclosure is represented by a line of yew trees, while the east side is terraced. A four-walled enclosure is shown on the 1863 OS map, partially abutting a roofed building which is no longer apparent, at its NW end. <1>
