Full Description

A survey of the archaeological and historic features was undertaken within Abernethy Forest Reserve for the RSPB in 1995.

A lime kiln shown on the 1863 OS map, and the 1:10,000 OS map is situated here, built into an east-facing steep river terrace. It is in excellent state of repair and with the exception of a juniper bush growing up through the kiln, is virtually free of obscuring vegetation. It stands to approximately 3m in height, and retains 6 courses at its NE end. The external width of the kiln is 10. 35m NS with an internal width of 3.44m NS. The rear wall is lm thick and consists of large dressed boulders packed internally with smaller stones. Some of the inner stones have a coating of calcium carbonate. The internal length is 9.18m, W/E, with the flue opening to the east, 4.45m long W/E. The opening is 1.5m wide. The boulders used in construction on the upper wall are water-worn, some up to 0.95m in length. <1>
