Full Description
NG35NE 14 3912 5782.
NG 3912 5782. On a small plateau some 40 yards E of the road to Uig, about 1/2 mile NW of Hinnisdal Bridge, at a height of nearly 200' OD, is a dilapidated circle of stones measuring about 42' in diameter externally. The stony mound is 9' broad and 3' in height. Adjoining it to the NW is a walled enclosure, in which are the foundations of a small hut. These structures are probably of later date than the circular building which is of a more archaic type than the deserted ruins.
RCAHMS 1928, visited 1915.
A circular stone-walled hut with the outer wall face visible round most of the perimeter indicating an overall diameter of 14.5m. A few stones of the inner wall face are visible in the N, W and SE giving a wall thickness of 1.4m, but the face is largely obscured by tumble from the wall which shows in places evidence of built courses. The entrance in the NW is ill-defined.
No trace of contemporary cultivation.
Attached to the SE side of the hut is a small enclosure which is probably contemporary with the enclosure and 'hut' to the NW of the hut circle. They are recent structures of the type contemporary with depopulated steadings.
Visited by OS (C F W) 3 May 1961 and (R L) 15 September 1971.
Note: NGR moved from NG 3912 5782 [IS-L 20/01/2017]
