Full Description

C Dagg undertook a pre-afforestaiton survey at Kinloch, Shieldaig in 1999.

Site 2. Shieling site on An Garbh Alit. On an alluvial fan which has split the bum and created an area of better-drained ground with a thick heather cover, gently sloping to the NNE where the burn cuts through the sandstone ridge. Eight features, of which one is a larger structure, probably a bothy, and seven are small structures associated with storage of produce and utensils. These seven are all between 1 and 2m in diameter or length and standing between 30cm and lm. high:
1. Roughly rectangular building measuring externally 5.2m. by 3.1m. aligned E-W with an entrance in the centre of the north facing wall. The interior is divided into 2 compartments.
2. Approximately horseshoe-shaped structure measuring 2m. across, 7m. SE of (1.)
3. One rough circle and an adjacent indistinct rubble pile, 9m. SW of (2.)
4. Oval structure 2m. by 1m. aligned NE-SW, approximately 9m. SW of (1.)
5. Two joined circles aligned ENE-WSW, 10m. NNW of (4.)
6. Roughly rectangular structure measuring 1.5m. in length, aligned N-S and making use of a large in situ boulder to form its S. wall., 11m. WNW of (5.)
7. Roughly square structure, 1.7m. across and making use of a large in situ boulder to form its E wall., 12m. WNW of (6.)
8. Possible circular structure 2m. in diameter, at the northern edge of the sliding area, NNW of (1.) <1>
