Full Description

A hut circle at Altandhu.

There are the remains of something apparently man-made at 9916 1191, near NB91SE0013 and NB91SE0015, a D-shaped depression with a stony bank surrounding. One edge of the depression is formed by the road, which may have cut off an originally circular structure. Not marked on RCAHMS3. Photo from the NW taken 23 March 2004.
Information supplied by D Mason, April 2004

199185 911943 Altandhu 1 CMM301: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and C MacNeilage in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure is in poor condition. It lies on a gentle west facing slope beside a single track road which truncates the eastern sector. It is 50m from a stream, 100m from a freshwater loch, Loch Camas an Fheidh, and 500m from the sea. The surrounding landscape is predominately heather covered, as is the HC's ring bank. Some wall facings are visible. The centre of the HC is filled with stone tumble, moss, bracken and brambles, and is deeper than expected. Possibly stone from the centre was robbed for use as a quarry when the road was built. It was not possible to measure the inner diameter. The outer diameter is 9.5m. Wall construction could not be ascertained. There is a possible entrance in southwest, width approximately 1.0m. CMM301 (see MHG) is distant 40m from CMM302 (see MHG24489). <1> <2>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details].

NGR adjusted to position as seen on 2009 vertical APs. <3>
