Full Description

NH62NW 7.02 609 294.

Formerly NH62NW 8

Centred at NH 609 294 on a W-facing slope is a settlement of four stone walled huts (A-D) and a contemporary field system.
All hut diameters are given between wall centres.
Hut 'A' is visible as a platform surrounded by traces of a wall measuring c. 9.0m in diameter, which is mutilated in the E arc where two clearance heaps have also been piled against it. The entrance is not evident.
'B' is ill-defined because of peat build up. It is visible as a platform surrounded by traces of walling measuring c. 7.0m in diameter. The entrance is not evident.
'C' measures c. 10.0m in diameter with the wall mutilated in the E arc and spread to c. 2.5m elsewhere. The simple entrance is in the W. One or two outer facing stones are visible in the SW.
'D' is oval measuring c. 10.5m E-W by c. 9.5m transversely with the simple entrance in the W. The wall is scarcely discernible in the E but is spread to c. 2.5m elsewhere.
About 70.0m S of hut 'D' is a circular hollow c. 5.0m in diameter which has the appearance of a small hut, but is more likely a howked clearance heap.
The field system is marked by stone clearance heaps with a few lynchets and ruinous walls and is greatly obscured by peat. One cultivation plot adjoining the N side of hut 'C' measures c. 30.0m by 10.0m.
Huts surveyed at 1/10,000.
Visited by OS (A A) 9 December 1971.
