Full Description

An hut circle and other possible features in Achany Wood, Inveran. They were seen and recorded during a survey in 1998 by Wordsworth Archaeological services in advance of a proposed woodland planting scheme. (NOTE: all site NGRS supplied in the report are incorrect and have been corrected using comparison between the plan supplied in the report, available aerial photography, historic OS mapping and SEPA/Scottish Gov LiDAR data)

A taped circle of trees marks the location of the footings for a hut circle or roundhouse 10m in internal diameter. Only an outer face of stones can be seen. Extending 20m to the east is a terrace marked by 1 clearance cairn and a possible boulder line, though the stones of the latter may have been shifted by forestry ploughs. This terrace lies 40m north of a sharper break in slope. 45m to the north on the crest of a slight hill is a cairn of large stones which measures 12m by 3m and is aligned roughly north-south. This may be the remains of a building though no distinct walling can be seen. Alternatively it may be the remains of a burial cairn. The remains are consistent with a small prehistoric settlement. The extent of the associated field system may become clearer after felling. Recommendation: Felling in this area should be carried out sensitively to prevent damage to the identified features. Replanting should follow the Forest Authority Guidelines in leaving at least 20m clear from the edge of identified features and linking the hut circle and cairn in a single unplanted area. <1>
