Full Description

Kilmorack power station with its integrated dam is the final (lowest) station on the Affric scheme. It makes use of water previously used by other stations in the scheme. The power station (originally built in the early 1960s) is a good example of an integrated dam and turbine hall utilising a steep sided river gorge for the generation of power.

The station was refurbished between 2002 and 2004, a project which included the overhaul of the turbines and refurbishment of the station interior. The turbine hall houses two Kaplan 10MW turbines.

The dam is of mass gravity type and provides a head of 17m to the turbines which are recessed into the floor of the turbine hall. As well as providing a degree of storage, the dam allows the regulation of the river flow which is essential in successful flood management as the dam is situated on a river system. The dam has a central single radial gate and a single drum gate with a Borland fish-pass between. These gates allow the spill of the dam to be accurately controlled and are situated beyond the south and north generating sets respectively. The design of the dam is relatively functional. The detailing applied to the turbine hall is standard for the building type.
