Full Description
A rapid walkover survey was carried out for a WGS by J Wordsworth in 2000.
A small farming settlement. The placename Allt an Rathain either refers to this site or a track leading to it.
1.1; The footings of a rectangular longhouse 7m by 4m externally aligned ENE/WSW. It possibly extended a further 7m to the west downslope —perhaps the site of a byre attached to the main dwelling.
1.2; A possible turf walled structure 8m by 4m aligned NE/SW. Possibly a barn or store.
1.3; A circular enclosure very poorly defined measuring cl2m in diameter and probably turf-walled.
1.4; A rectangular enclosure 17m long by 9m wide attached to the SE side of 1.3 and aligned SE/ NW. Its walls survive as low rounded banks spread over 1.5m and up to 0.3m high. A bank extends from the SE corner towards the burn.
1.5; A rectangular enclosure set on the E side of both 1.3 & 1.4. Its E end is under heather rather than the species-rich grassland found elsewhere in this area. It measures 23m SE and 19m NE. This may have been the sheepfold marked in 1902. <1>
