Full Description
NG94SE 5 centred c.971 421
An extensive shieling settlement centred NG 971 421 was noted during an afforestation survey by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 2000. It consisted of at least 5 structures and 5 enclosures covering an area c200m by 100m. Partly obscured by bracken, 2 enclosures and 1 building were recorded on the current OS map. The buildings all appeared to be of drystone construction suggesting a relatively late date for these features, perhaps as surviving late 18th century/early 19th century in date. The recorded building is aligned E/W and measures 7m by 4m with an central store or more probably the base for an illicit still 0.5m in diameter. The other buildings ranged from 3m by 3m to 5m by 2m with walls surviving up to 0.6m high.
It was recommended that this was a well-preserved shieling settlement displaying a variety of different
features and should remain unplanted in its entirety. Treatment of the bracken would make the site a more visible feature within the new woodland. <1>
