Full Description

An enclosure, situated at the SW end of a ridge, was noted during a forestry survey by Wordsworth Archaeological Services in 1999 at Clune Hill. It was defined by an earthen and turf bank spread to over 2m in width and stood up to 0.5m in height although is averaged only 0.2m in height overall. There were elements of drystone walling in places. As there were no signs of cultivation remains within the enclosure, it was considered to be a stock enclosure. <1>

The feature is vaguely visible in vertical aerial photography but clearly visible in Scottish Gov/SEPA LiDAR data. An additional dyke, not previously recorded, but visible in the LiDAR appears to link this dyked enclosure with that around the mill dam and pond to the east (see MHG38110 and MHG64534). <2> <3>

The site was visited during a walkover survey by West Coast Archaeological Services in 2015 in advance of a proposed scheme by Scottish Water. Site 17: Boundary: A turf/stone bank spread 2m wide and up to 0.8m high comprises the remains of an enclosure or boundary wall. <4>

NOTE: the NGR for and depictions of this site in <4> are innaccurate, possibly because of an error or inaccuracy with the GPS used during the survey [IS-L 12/02/2026].

This enclosure may be associated with a possible farmstead, the building remains of which appear to lie at its east end - see MHG30039.
