Full Description

A survey of the archaeological and historic features was undertaken within Abernethy Forest Reserve for the RSPB in 1995.

The remains of a sub-rectangular kiln was found here measuring 6.4m N/Sand 4.5m externally E/W. The kiln itself is 4.1m in total length, while the flue is 2.3m long. The structure is in a poor state of preservation with the interior damaged by tumble and rubble infill. The flue width is approximately 1.84m externally. The structure was built into the south face of a slump terrace and is approximately 1.75m high from the top of the kiln footings to the flue exit. The structure was built of large boulders, and there are the remains of several faced stones internally. The total width of the kiln wall appears to be about lm. It is entirely undocumented. <1>
