What may be a township comprising 5 unroofed buildings, 3 of which are attached to a length of field wall, and 2 enclosures is depicted on 1st edition of OS 6-inch map (Ross-shire 1880, sheet cxvii). Two unroofed buildings, each attached to a length of field wall, are shown on current edition of OS 1:10000 map (1971).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 6 May 1996
Site visited by C. Dagg 15/9/00 as part of archaeological assessment of route of proposed water main.
Of first edition map evidence only one is still standing: a barn or byre with louvred windows suggesting additional function of a game store. The modern Reraig cottage stands on site of another original buildong, west of this further ruins and dykes can be seen extending west along the shore to a boat port and small jetty.
The following features were also noted:
NG8386 3636 Structure: just above the track at the beginning of forestry. This appears to be building marked on the 1st edition OS map. A turf and stone dyke runs east from this building along north edge of forestry track, curving N to E of the gravel pit.
NG8382 3634 Drystone dyke: This does not appear on the 1st edition OS map, so presumably dates after 1875. It runs from the present track to the corner of the standing building.
NG8383 3634 Possible remains of structure. On the site of a building as marked on the 1st ed. OS map, are possible footings and grass covered rubble. This lies just east of drystone dyke.
NG8386 3640 Sheepfold. North of the structure and overgrown by mature trees, a roughly square drystone enclosure with entrances west and east, and a concrete sheepwash in the SW corner. A track runs NE up the slope between the sheepfold and the building. On the 1st Ed. OS map this track divides east of the sheepfold, heading north and east.
