Full Description

Auchinkrask, Site of Shieling. <1>

A field-system is shown on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1877-78, sheet lvii). It is also depicted, with more extensive field walls, on the current edition of the OS 1:10560 map (1964)
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 11 October 1995.

Vertical aerial photography, especially those taken in 2009 and 2016, shows a cluster of at least four buildings, and two enclosures, one of which is rectangular, the other sub-circular and located c.30m to the northwest of the other remains, lying c.80m to the west of the Bannock Burn almost in the southeast corner of the field system as seen on the OS 1st Edition map (see MHG13389). Some of the more irregular dykes, especially one which runs across from southwest to northeast to the south of the cluster of buildings may be older and may relate to the original shieling, of which the buildings may have been a later development as a farmstead, especially given the surrounding field system. The more regular, straight dykes are probably a later phase of development. Some of the fields show remains of rig cultivation. <2> <3>
