Full Description
On grass-and-heather-covered E shore of Loch na Totaig there are three, or possibly four, huts, a pen and an enclosure, scattered over a distance of about 200m. Three of the huts lies close together at S end of the site and range from 3m to 5.2m in length by 1.4m to 3m in breadth within stone walls of variable construction, one having stone-faced banks 1.2m thick (ACHIL94 18), another faced-rubble walls 0.5m thick and 0.6m high (ACHIL94 19), and the third low stony banks 0.9m thick (ACHIL94 20). One of the huts (ACHIL94 19) overlies a second hut (ACHIL94 18) on its S, and there is an enclosure, defined by stony banks, immediately NW. What may be a fourth hut is situated on a low heather-covered knoll on the shore of the loch at the N of the site at NB 9805 1620. A circular pen (ACHIL94 21) lies at NB 9812 1615, between the hut group and the possible hut by the shore to the N. It measures 5m in diameter within much reduced drystone walls 0.15m high, with a heap of rubble beside it. May's Survey of 1758 (SRO, RHP 85395) depicts an area of land with two buildings, labelled as a shieling, at this location.
