NMRS Report: (23/05/2006 14:25:48)
ND34SW 428 ND 3259 4353
Very little is now visible of an extensive area of shallow quarrying that formerly existed on an E-facing slope immediately S of Lineside farmsteading (ND34SW 439). The quarrying is not depicted on either the 1st or 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1876, sheet xxix; 1907, sheet xxix), though both show the area as uncultivated ground, but it is visible on RAF vertical aerial photographs taken in 1946 (RAF 106/G/ SCOT/UK.74, prints 3278-9). These photographs show a large oval pit immediately adjacent to the railway track and a number of smaller pits to the E. Information from Mr Nicholson, the present owner of Lineside, indicates that the pits were filled in to improve the pasture.
Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 15 June 2004.
