Full Description
NMRS Report: (22/11/2005)
NN58NE 28 5552 8955
The remains of a sawmill were recorded here during a detailed archaeological survey of Strathmashie Community Forest near Laggan, Highland. The survey was carried out to assess the evidence for past human use and to ascertain whether there was enough archaeology to develop a heritage trail in the forest. The mill was found in light tree cover just outside the forestry ground. The main features visible today are three rectangular concrete blocks with iron pins protruding vertically from their surface. Around are a series of regularly-shaped depressions up to 1.3m deep. It is known locally that the sawmill was owned owned privately but was used by the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit during WWII, so it must predate this.
