Full Description
NMRS Report: (28/11/2005)
NN5897 9107 to 5925 9157
The remains of the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit railway was recorded during a detailed archaeological survey of Strathmashie Community Forest near Laggan, Highland. It was built during World War 2, when the Unit was working in the forest. The section described here runs for around 600 metres in a northerly direction. Two lines can be seen, shownby two parallel lines of timbers, spaced a metre apart. Some areas of hillside have been cut into to create a level platform for the railway. A wider area of level ground may have been a siding or loading area. The survey was carried out to assess the evidence for past human use and to ascertain whether there was enough archaeology to develop a heritage trail in the forest.
