Full Description

A hut circle near Loch Bad A'Chreamh.

NG88SW 24 80750 81052
Hut circle, measuring 6m in diameter, with an E facing entrance. A more modern building, probably a shieling hut, has been built onto the N of the circle without disturbance to the foundations of the circle. Information by email from Terry Doe, 2 April 2006. <1>

180749 881051 Loch Bad A' Chreamh 5 HAB005: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This circular structure lies on a platform built out from a gentle south facing slope in an undulating grazed grassland landscape. There are panoramic inland views from the site. Some wall facings are visible as is the ring bank. Average inner diameter is 5.8m, outer diameter is 8.6m. The double skinned wall is 1.4m thick with maximum height 0.4m. The entrance faces southeast with terminals slightly extended although recorded measurements do not highlight this (see sketch). An enclosure 6m X 12m adjoins NE wall (see sketch) and may be contemporary. Measured width of the entrance externally is 0.8m, internally is 1.2m, with passage length 1m. This hut circle seems to be associated with a cluster of 8 structures in all, HAB001 (see MHG49704), distant 200m, HAB002 (see MHG49721), HAB003 (see MHG49722), HAB004 (see MHG49723) distant 170m, HAB006 (see MHG49719) distant 50m, HAB007 (see MHG49705), and HAB008 (MHG49706). These are all sited near to an ancient trackway from Naast to Sand River and Gairloch. <2> <3>
