Full Description
This burnt mound is situated 560m NE of Balnuick farmsteading, on the SW side of an un-named stream that runs down the SE-facing slope from a spring some 290m to the NW. Roughly circular on plan, the grass- and gorse-grown mound measures 6.8m in diameter by about 0.6m in height. Although an eroded area on the S side of the mound has exposed what appears to be burnt stones, a turf was removed from the top of the mound revealing a core comprising angular fragments of burnt stone and small fragments of charcoal contained within a matrix of loose black soil. It is one of four burnt mounds strung out over a distance of 200m on both sides of an un-named stream.
Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 24 October 2006.
