NMRS Report: (21/03/2007 13:58:14)
NH92NE 46 NH 9848 2585
This limekiln has been set into a S-facing slope in what is now a field of rough pasture 120m W of Balnuick farmsteading. On the date of visit the kiln was largely obscured by a dense cover of gorse, but it comprises a debris-filled pot, measuring about 2m in diameter by at least 1m in depth, within a ruined rubble wall up to 2m in thickness. The draw-hole is in the S side of the kiln. Adjacent to the W side of the kiln is a small U-shaped feature, open-ended to the S, which may have been some form of store. Its sides and N end are faced with drystone walling.
The kiln is depicted on both the 1st and 2nd editions of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874-5, sheet xxxiv; 1903, sheet xxxiv); on the latter it is annotated `Old Limekiln'.
Visited by RCAHMS (TIP, SH) 13 October 2006.
