Full Description

NMRS Report: (08/02/2007 12:20:52)
NG24NE 8001 c. 24 47
N57 26 W6 36

NLO: Loch Dunvegan [name centred NG 21 53].

Possibly on map sheet NG34NW.

Corry-by-Broadford, 29th Oct. A vessel, apparently a schooner or brigantine, with the name HELENE painted on her stern, is lying capsized in Loch Follart, about 3 cables lengths from the island of Islay. She has part of her sails bent, and is held fast, apparently by her anchors, in about 35 fathoms water.
Source: LL, No. 15,154, London, Friday, October 31 1862.

Kyleakin (Skye), 22nd Nov. The HELENE, found in Loch Follart, West of Skye, on the 27th Oct., derelict, was a brig, belonging to Stralsund.
Source: LL, No. 15,177, London, Thursday, November 27 1862.

NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 10276).

The location assigned to this record is essentially tentative. Loch Follart is not cited as such on the 1998 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map, but the name presumably applies to the unnamed SE projection of Loch Dunvegan. Kinlochfollart manse (NG24NE 27) is at NG 25087 46646.
The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998), possibly suggesting her successful recovery.
Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 8 February 2007.
