Full Description

In January last (1883?) upwards of 50 silver coins were found by workmen in the hillside at Woodend, near Portree. Most of the coins were found on a rock in the burn. Many of them were at once purchased by the people of Portree, but the police becoming aware of the discovery, most of the coins, if not all, were recovered by the procurator-fiscal and forwarded to the Exchequer. They were subsequently restored to their owners.
The hoard comprised 50 English coins from Mary to James I, 2 Scottish coins of James VI and a French coin of Henry IV.
G Sim 1884.
