Full Description

This is a historic graveyard situated on croft land and known through oral tradition. The extent of the graveyard is unknown and it survives today only as a low mound of rubble. A local correspondent reports that generations of crofters, have respected the site to ensure its survival. It is reported that the last person to be buried there was the son of a man called Domhnall Mor Bhrunachan c 1800. It is not clear whether this was once the main burial ground for the whole of Bohuntin which at one time had a population of over 200 people. It is though that the single track road up Glen Roy would have at one time been adjacent to the site of the burial ground and has since been realigned. <1>

Three photographs of a known grave were submitted by Keith Hoole on the 24/10/2011. He also commented that the graveyard was located in a part of the field where the ground was hard to excavate. He also noted that it was a location with a noteable view which was visible from houses within the area. <2>

A geophysical (resistance) survey of the area was conducted in 2013 by Rose Geophysical Consultants in response to a planning application. The survey covered the area of the postulated burial mound and the area of a proposed single house plot. The data were dominated by anomalies thought to be due to natural variations within the underlying soil and bedrock and agricultural activity. Although some ephemeral anomalies of possible interest were tentatively noted around the surface mound their interpretation was cautious. No anomalies thought to be archaeologically significant were detected within the area of the planning application itself. <3>
