MHG51460 - Small cairn in Mullans Wood (5 of 8)

Summary

One of a group of eight small cairns or field clearance piles.

Type and Period (1)

  • CLEARANCE CAIRN (Early Bronze Age to Late Iron Age - 2400 BC to 560 AD?)

Protected Status

  • None recorded

Full Description

This is one of 8 moss-covered piles, spread to 4m in diameter and less prominent than the other cairns in this wood. <1>

Three of the piles were investigated during trial trenching in December 2008 and were found to be clearance heaps rather than anything more structured. It therefore seems likely that the other piles in this group have a similar origin. It is likely that they are contemporary with the hut circle to the west (MHG51441). <2><3>
