Full Description
NM48SW 31 42396 80350
A system of field-banks encloses the flatter ground on the well-drained but broken ridge to the N of Cachlaidh Ruadh. Modern ploughing has removed some of the boundaries, but there were two or three fields. Most of the surviving banks tend to pursue sinuous lines, but one towards the N is very straight (NM 42345 80325 to NM 42453 80377) and corresponds to a boundary shown on Chapman's estate map of 1809. Patches of lazy beds can also be seen across the ridge, lying at the edges of smooth field surfaces that have been ploughed more recently, probably for reseeding. At least one discrete patch of widely-spaced furrows on the ENE flank of the ridge may be the remains of rig-and-furrow rather than lazy bed cultivation (centred NM 42457 80332). Seven heaps of field-cleared stones are scattered across the ridge, generally lying at the edges of patches of lazy beds, or on rock outcrops amongst the cultivation.
