Full Description
Martin Briscoe submitted information about two Nissen huts alongside the A82 on the south side of Fort Augustus. These are original WW2 Nissen huts, although probably re-roofed at some time. The former Spean Bridge to Fort Augustus railway runs immediately behind the huts and there is a platform where it is said that ammunition was unloaded. There also used to be a road up to the front of the huts. This story, relayed by a local resident, has been confirmed by other contacts of Mr Briscoe. It has been suggested that there was some submarine activity in Loch Ness during WW2. It has also been mentioned that some "frames" have been found on the bottom of the loch which were said to have been used during the war.
Reference is made to a "naval ammunition store being established at Fort Augustus" and using the railway line in the book "The Story of the West Highland: The 1940s LNER guide to the line" (ISBN 09-05489-69-1). <1><2>
