Full Description

The Cottage was originally built as a pair of semi-detached dwellings. These were two of only four buildings in Achnasheen (the field of the rain) before 1870 and were owned by the estate known as Strathbran. At one time the western house was occupied by "Murdo the Merchant" (surname unknown) who kept a shop in the small building to the south. In 1969 the cottage had two upstairs areas and two staircases but was all one on the ground floor. A portion of the right hand room was screened off to form a corridor and a wash hand basin was fitted in the window. Extensive renovations and alterations were subsequently carried out, illustrated by sketches in <1>. The wall and staircase at the west end were removed and the stone used to build the drystone syke at the front. <1>
