Full Description

The shallow remains of a ditch, with two terminals, were recorded in Trench 13 during an archaeological evaluation by Alba Archaeology in 2008 at Sutherland Road, Dornoch. There was no direct dating evidence, but it was considered that the form of the monument suggested it was the ditch of a Bronze Age barrow. A modern ditch cut through the possible ring ditch. <1>

Other than 'Trench 13', no precise location information for this feature is given in the report, and although there are sketch sections and a sketch plan and individual descriptions in the photograph register indicating that sample excavation of the feature was undertaken, no additional description is offered. The impression given by the report itself is that it was mainly compiled from site notes on the day the trenches were opened. There was clearly an intention to undertake further work and perhaps the report for that phase would have included a more complete description and narrative [IS-L 23/06/2026].

See MHG65981 for a similar, though slighty larger, feature c.55m to the northwest excavated during a watching brief by AOC Archaeology Group in 2018.
