MHG53420 - Enclosure, Lower Tote

Summary

Sub-oval enclosure of uncertain date.

Type and Period (1)

  • SUB CIRCULAR ENCLOSURE (Built, Medieval to 19th Century - 1058 AD? to 1900 AD?)

Protected Status

  • None recorded

Full Description

The remains of a sub-oval enclosure that appears (from vertical aerial photography) to survive only as low footings. It is presumably part of and contemporary with the remains of Lower Tote township (located to the south and east) but may be earlier. Extensive areas of rig and furrow surround the enclosure and township in all directions. Historic (1st and 2nd edition) OS mapping has not recorded this area in sufficient detail to record the enclosure or much of the adjacent settlement remains thereby not allowing the feature to be dated with any degree of certainty. The enclosure is to be removed to make way for a new house. <1> <2>
