Full Description
RCAHMS Canmore description:
NC64NW 12 61652 47797
This granite milestone stands on the E verge of the A836 public road at the abandoned farmstead of Lettermore. Roughly triangular in section, the stone has two flat, dressed, faces on the front and a rounded rear that is roughly hewn. The stone measures 0.4m in breadth by 0.3m in depth and 0.6m in height, and the upper part presents a steeply-sloping facet to the road. The stone bears no inscription, but there is a bench-mark on its N side and both shoulders of the stone have been damaged. The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherlandshire 1878, sheet XXXV) notes that the milestone marked the distance in miles to ‘TONGUE 8½’ and ‘ALTNAHARROW 9½’.
Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 27 October 2009. <1>
