Full Description

RCAHMS Canmore description:
NC53NE 18 57803 39104
This granite milestone stands on the E verge of the A836 public road in moorland 4km N of Altnaharra. Roughly triangular in section, the stone has two flat, dressed, faces on the front and a rounded rear that is roughly hewn. The stone measures 0.41m in breadth by 0.3m in depth and 0.45m in height, and the upper part presents a steeply-sloping facet to the road. The stone bears no inscription, but there is a bench-mark on its N side. The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherlandshire 1878, sheet XLIII) notes that the stone marked the distance in miles to ‘TONGUE 15½’ and ‘ALTNAHARROW 2½’.
Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 27 October 2009. <1>
