Full Description
Two shieling huts were noted by WCAS in a 2012 DBA and walkover survey in advance of a woodland creation scheme. The southern shieling hut was located on the east side of a gorge and on a narrow terrace, facing northwest. It was a stone or turf-built shieling hut under bracken measuring 6m north to south by 4.5m over walls 1m wide and up to 0.7m high. There was a 0.7m-wide entrance in the north side and it may have overlied an early structure. The northern shieling hut was located 8m to the northeast of the first. It was a small, boulder-built shieling under bracken and heather measuring 4.5m northwest to southeast by 4m over walls 0.6m wide and 0.4m high. There was a possible 0.6m-wide entrance in the east side. These two shielings correspond with Wordsworth's Site 6. <1> <2>
