Full Description
The site was visited and photographed by R Spencer-Jones of NOSAS on the 7th of May 2014. He described the site as:
"On the south facing slopes, on the north bank of the western end of Loch Mullardoch, is a substantial ruined dwelling sited on a platform, with substantial enclosure walls to the south. It faces south, with walls approximately 10m x 3m. Occupying the SW corner, there is a small walled enclosure which is ruined in its NE aspect.
This building is substantial enough to represent a dwelling house, possibly a farmstead." <1>
Several circular stone-built structures were identified on land exposed by low water at the top west end of Glen Cannich by Glenn Wilks, a walker, on the 29th June 2021. Following notification to Historic Environment Scotland, four members of the North of Scotland Archaeological Society and Mr Wilks visited this area on 27th July 2021. Their aim was to survey these structures and to obtain material for carbon dating before the waters of the loch rose again. Other structures in the area were also surveyed.
Dwelling with enclosure. On the south facing slopes at the west end of previous Loch Lungard, now subsumed into the waters of Loch Mullardoch, is a substantial ruined dwelling sited on a platform. Aligned E-W it has external dimensions of approximately 10 x 3m. Occupying the SW corner is a small walled compartment which is tumbled in its NE aspect. This building is substantial enough to represent a dwelling house, possibly a farmstead, particularly as there is a substantial enclosure to the south. On a subsequent visit, 10th August 2021, it was photographed from the track above it. <2>
